Child pornography ring busted

by Indeewara Thilakarathne and Negombo Special correspondent

National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) and Police officials in a joint raid conducted in Negombo yesterday busted a child pornography ring, arresting seven suspects.

A spokesman for the NCPA said they also detained 11 boys aged 10-12 during the raid, which took place at a restaurant at Ethukale, Negombo, where the suspects were making a pornographic movie. Camera equipment were also seized.

Police investigations have revealed that the main suspect and the main actor of the pornographic film are from Maligawatte. The main suspect is a bachelor who had recently returned to Sri Lanka after being employed abroad. The 'actor' was arrested while abusing two of the minors. Some of the children had arrived at the location in their school uniforms from Maligawatte, Bambalapitiya and Negombo. Several schoolgirls were also due to come for the shooting, the NCPA spokesman said.

The minors will be subjected to a medical test today.

Officers from the Negombo police station and the Police Special Child Protection Unit joined NCPA officials for the raid.
