PM assures Parliament : Govt. to strengthen electoral system and Commission

by Jayantha Sri Nissanka and Bharatha Malawaraarachchi

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday assured Parliament that the Government will extend all necessary facilities for the strengthening of the Election Commission.

The Premier was responding to an oral question raised by PA MP Nimal Siripala de Silva.

In his reply the Premier said discussions are being held with party leaders in Parliament regarding changes necessary for the system of election of Members of Parliament and associated matters. The Prime Minister said the Government had received the report of the Observer Group sent by the European Union who monitored the last general election and the report includes 11 recommendations.

Amongst them are the full and early implementation of the 17th Amendment to the Constitution, renewal of the Parliamentary Election Act, a code of conduct for campaigning political parties, candidates and supporters and voter identification.
