Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has directed the Employment and Labour Ministry to formulate an unemployment insurance scheme for the benefit of employees whose services are terminated legally by various institutions. The Prime Minister disclosed this at a meeting of the Government Parliamentary Group held at the Parliamentary Complex on Monday. The Prime Minister said mere legal protection would be insufficient for employees at the time their services were being terminated. Some monetary protection too could be provided to them through such insurance in addition to the compensation payments paid in such instances. Employment and Labour Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe said a special ILO delegation is now preparing a feasibility report about the proposed unemployment insurance scheme. The team is expected to submit its report before the end of this month. |
