The Sathosa chain will relaunch its retail operations in Jaffna peninsula on Friday with the opening of a supermarket at Kasthuriyar Road in the heart of the city. This will be the first supermarket to open in Jaffna after the war.

A Sathosa spokesman said that the supermarket will provide food and other essential commodities to the Jaffna people at prices prevailing in the rest of the country, and they will maintain the same quality of the Sathosa branded products available in other outlets.

Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister Ravi Karunanayake said that plans are under way to upgrade the supermarket into a super-mall within the next few months, under the ongoing 100 super-mall project. He said that Lanka Salusala Ltd. STC General Trading Ltd. are also looking forward to re-start their operations in Jaffna within the first half of this year.

The Sathosa chain had operated three more outlets in the Jaffna peninsula - Point Pedro, Kankesanthurai and on the Kandy road, which were closed in the 1990's due to the war. These outlets would also be re-opened in due course.
