Rosy calls for more women's representation in Parliament

by Ananda Kannangara

Eksath Lakvanith Peramuna President Rosy Senanayake making a resolution at the UNP National Convention requested the party leadership to increase the women's representation in Parliament by 20 per cent.

"Out of the Lankan population, 53 per cent are recorded as women and it is sorry to say that only 4 per cent represent our Parliament at present".

Commenting on the progress achieved during the past one year Senanayake said that the Government was able to overcome the most important election pledge of dealing with the LTTE and to stop the two decade old Northern war under the able leadership of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

"As we all are aware that during the past two decades thousands and thousands of valuable lives and millions worth of properties were destroyed due to the war and the security in the city of Colombo and in other major towns were tightened to prevent sporadic terrorist attacks and violence".

"But this situation was changed by the Government within few weeks with international support."

She also reminded the audience about the viable measures taken by the Government to restore the crippled power supply.

"At the time when the Government took over office the country's power supply had crippled and many factories had to be closed as a result. The Government bravely faced this situation and overcame this problem within a very short period," she said.

"At that time when the Government came to power the country's economy showed a negative growth, but with the launching of numerous development projects it was converted into a positive growth", she said.

Senanayake also said the Government has taken steps to develop the Northern areas from the funds obtained after the Oslo summit.

"Action to develop the entire Southern province including the Hambantota District and the Moneragala District with the objective of creating a large number of employment opportunities has been taken.

"Considering all these programmes launched by the Government during the past one year we are well aware that the present Government will be able to do a complete change of the country's economy in the next few years", she added.
