Govt, LTTE committees on N-E relief set up

The Government and the LTTE yesterday formed district committees to examine and inform the newly set up Secretariat for North-East Humanitarian Needs of the necessary relief meassures for the normalisation of civilian lives.

All immediate rehabilitation and reconstruction matters of the region come under the Secretariat opened on Sunday by the Japanese and Norwegian Ambassadors in Colombo.

"The role of the district committees is to conduct consultations in each district with broad participation of the people on the immediate humanitarian needs," LTTE Spokesman Daya Master told the Daily News.

The Secretariat set up in the Kilinochchi Government Agent's Compound comes under the Sub- Committee on Immediate Rehabilitation needs co-headed by Peace Secretariat Chief Bernard Gunatilake and LTTE Political Chief S.P. Thamilchelvam.

The Government and the LTTE also agreed on three directors - representing one each the Government, LTTE and the Muslims - who will lead the Secretariat.

Daya Master said all matters of North-East rehabilitation would come under the newly set up secretariat.

Peace Secretariat Chief Bernard Gunatilake led the Government delegation while LTTE Political Chief Thamilchelvam led the LTTE delegation for the meeting chaired by Norwegian Ambassador Jon Westborg.
