by Manjula Fernando In the light of the increasing number of newspaper reports highlighting the involvement of young children in clashes and violent incidents Education Minister Dr.Karunasena Kodithuwakku has warned parents to be more attentive and vigilant on their children's whereabouts and their friends. The Minister observed private tuition classes also play a significant role in the area of student discipline. Thus parents should be very careful and meticulous in choosing tuition classes for their children, he said. He said that there had always been 'minor' school-clashes and sudden bouts of unruliness, among the student community. But the number of fatal incidents involving students keep increasing and this is a disturbing trend which needs everyone's attention. The Ministry has organised a series of conferences under Zonal level for principals, religious dignitaries, teachers and parents to discuss the issue of deteriorating discipline among school children. The Minister attributed the violent trend in schools to mismanagement and lack of guidance on the part of school authorities as well as lack of parental care and attention. He said, "It will be futile to try and control children by enforcing strict rules and regulations in schools. They need to be disciplined through proper guidance and care." The Minister said that authorities should be flexible and practical when addressing sensitive issues concerning students rather than sticking to official circulars. |
