All set for 'Shilpa 2002'

Handicrafts exhibitions have been held in six provinces for the selection of creations for the "Shilpa 2002" the National Festival of Handicrafts and Tourism to be held at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall from December 27 to 30.

Trade exhibitions were held in the North, the East, North-Central, Western, Sabaragamuwa and the Southern provinces.

The national festival has been organised by the National Crafts Council aimed at promoting and protecting the national handicrafts industry and to improve economy of those engaged in the trade. The introduction of new technology and designs, the establishment and promotion of crafts in villages; introduction of foreign expertise to improve the industry; the establishment of Craftsmen's Societies; the unification of Craftsmen islandwide are other factors identified through the programme.

In the all-island category, first place was won by R.P. Nayana Kumara Wimalasurendra for the creation of a Kandyan piece of jewellery "Loonu-mal malaya", the second place by D.W.Palitha Jayasekera- for the Buddha statue and the third place by M.Wasantha Ekanayake for the creation of a set of coconut-leaf hats.

A spokesman for The National Crafts Council said that the exhibition venue will consist 100 trade stalls available for a nominal rent. Those desirous of renting out stalls should contact the Director, National Crafts Council at Janakala Kendraya, Battaramulla.
