by Trincomalee correspondent Free uniform material for students will be distributed on a cloth stamp issued to students which will be delivered at the homes of the students by Grama Niladharis, said Minister of School Education, Suranimala Rajapakse at a meeting held at the District Secretariat Trincomalee with regard to the issue of free school uniform material. Divisional Secretaries, Education officials, and officials of Multi Purpose Cooperative Societies in the district attended the meeting. Minister Rajapaksa said unnecessary problems may not arise if the Grama Niladaris compiled correct information and statistics. The Minister requested the Divisional Secretaries to educate Grama Niladharis and cooperative society officials with regard to the issue of free school uniform material. Issue of free uniform material should be completed by the fourth week of January 2003. Issue of school uniform material is a welfare activity and in future all such welfare activities would be directed through Divisional Secretaries. The necessary legislation have been presented to Parliament and will come in to effect in June next year. Divisional Secretaries are officials who can undertake any work load. Divisional Secretaries can muster the services of field officers and also form committees in regard to the issue of free uniform material. He said the issue of free uniform material to students was the brain child of the late President R. Premadasa and the present government has taken a policy decision to issue the uniform material through Divisional Secretaries. According to official statistics 83,340 students in Trincomalee district are to receive uniform material which will be issued during the 3rd and 4th weeks of January. Trincomalee district MP, M. K. A. D. S. Gunawardhana, UNP organiser Sunil Santha Ranaweera, and Government Agent N. P. K. Nelumdeniya also spoke. Divisional Secretaries and General Managers of Multi Purpose Cooperative Societies said they have no problems with regard to the issue of school uniform material. |
