by Trincomalee correspondent After signing an agreement between the World Bank and the North East Provincial Council, for a grant of US $ 31m to the emergency reconstruction programme for the NEP, World Bank Country Director for Sri Lanka Peter Harrold said this is a small contribution from the World Bank in the context of the peace process. Harrold said this is the first time an agreement was signed directly between the World Bank and the North East Provincial Council. Under this agreement resources will start flowing soon into the NEP. This will follow more resources flowing into the NEP even in advance of the final peace agreement. He said the World Bank will also help towards resettlement of returnees. Government officials should provide cooperation to help provide services to the displaced. With more financial assistance available this part of the country could flourish in the future. Successful implementation is expected within a short period of time. Chief Secretary NEP S. Rengarajah thanked the World Bank for coming forward to help the needy people in the NEP. Under the North East reconstruction programme the funds will be utilised to provide health, water supply, capacity building and livelihood support to displaced persons. Rengarajah also said that each displaced family will be paid Rs. 15,000 to help resettle in addition to the proposed package. Country Director Peter Harrold signed on behalf of the World Bank and Chief Secretary S. Rengarajah signed on behalf of the North East Provincial Council. |
