AGM illegal say Judicial officials

The President of the Judicial Services Association Sunil Gamini Perera yesterday asserted that he and his colleague JSA Secretary G.D. Kulatilake were the legal office-bearers of the Association and described the judges conference held on December 14 as illegal.

He described as laughable the post of Patron conferred on Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva at the illegal meeting since there was no such post in the entire 60-year history of the JSA.

"It is only the Secretary- in this instance Mr. Kulatilake- who is empowered to summon the Annual Conference followed by the AGM".He had reliable information that the District Judges who participated at this conference were arm-twisted into doing so. There are many(judges) among the participants who are even willing to furnish affidavits that they were compelled to attend the conference under duress, the JSA President said.

He said he was even prepared to face the supreme sacrifice in defence of the Independence of the Judiciary.

The Judicial Service Association at the December 14 conference passed a resolution unanimously to oust its President Sunil Gamini Perera and Secretary G.D. Kulatillake at the Annual General Meeting held on Saturday.

Kandy Magistrate and Additional District Judge Leon Seneviratne was elected as the new President of the Association. Maligakanda Magistrate and Additional District Judge Kusala Sarojini Weerawardena was elected as the new secretary of the Association.

Colombo Additional Magistrate Lalith Jayasuriya was elected as the Treasurer and Galle Magistrate Pradeep Jayatilleke as the Editor.

Meanwhile, the ousted Judicial Officers claimed that the AGM held on Saturday was illegal and unconstitutional.
