by Asanga Warnakulasuriya Four foreigners were arrested by Dompe Police in connection with a massive electricity fraud running into nearly Rs. 400 million .The suspects - three indians and a Bangladeshi - were remanded into protective custody till December 27 by Pugoda Acting Magistrate, M.D.Siriwardena on Saturday. The CEB official said that this was the biggest ever power piracy recorded in Sri Lanka.The suspects were arrested from a metal factory in Dekatana where the power piracy had taken place, following a tip off from the CEB Special Unit. The factory jointly run by the suspects employing around 300 workers was in the business of moulding old iron rods into new rods.The technician of the factory, a foreigner had tampered with the original seal of the meter at the factory replacing it with an improvised one.The monthly electricity bill of this factory was around Rs. 200,000. |
