Strike suspended, health services back to normal

by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi

Hospital services returned to normality from yesterday morning after the Joint Council of Professions Supplementary to Medicine (JCPSM) suspended their strike which continued for over two weeks. National Hospital Director Dr. Hector Weerasinghe said patients were being provided services after the strike was suspended.

Earlier, the JCPSM had extensive discussions with the Cabinet Sub Committee appointed to look into their problems.

"They promised to provide solutions to our problems within three months", Council spokesman Ravi Kumudesh told the Daily News yesterday.

He said the committee pledged to upgrade the Professions Supplementary to Medicine to be on par with international standards.

"We expect fair solutions to our problems from the Cabinet Sub Committee," said Kumudesh adding that they are in constant touch with the committee.

The JCPSM demanded Health Authorities not to implement the Junaid Committee report which seeks to rectify salary anomalies in the Health sector.

The Union launched their strike on November 28.

The Government appointed a Cabinet Sub Committee comprising five Ministers to look into the JCPSM strike and make recommendations to resolve the issue.

The Committee headed by Minister Karu Jayasuriya comprised P. Dayaratne, Dr. Rajitha Senaratne, Vajira Abeywardena and Alick Aluvihare.

The JCPSM also welcomed the Government's decision to appoint a Cabinet Sub Committee and expected that it would take swift measures to solve their problems.
