Lankan students win awards at Olympiad competitions An awards ceremony organised by CINTEC was held at the Auditorium of the Meteorology Department under the patronage of Minister for Economic Reform, Science and Technology Milinda Moragoda. Five students who participated in the Olympiad in Information Technology in Finland and Korea received awards. Certificates were also presented to winners of the National Information Technology competitions (2001/2002) and for students who were successful at the National Examination in Information Technology 2002. The International Olympiad organises international competitions in the fields of Information Technology, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Mathematics and Astrology. Olympiad competitions were launched in 1989 with the participation of 13 countries and Sri Lanka joined in 1992. CINTEC, an institution under the purview of the Ministry of Economic Reform, Science and Technology participated on 11 occasions in these competitions. At the 14th competition 79 countries and 280 Technologists participated. The Bronze Medal winners of this year and the winners of the previous year received their awards. Sri Lanka won two Gold medals, four Silver medals and nine Bronze medals. The students who participated said that an extended program should be launched to involve outstation students too. CINTEC organises these competitions annually in order to develop the information technology sector in Sri Lanka, to attract a new generation to this sector and to provide international experiences in this sector to the new generation in Sri Lanka, Secretary, Ministry for Economic Reform, Science and Technology G. Hewagama, Director, Council for Information Technology Ajith Ekanayake, Chairman, CINTEC Eran Wickremaratne and other officials participated. |
