CCISL South Asian Congress

The Chamber of Construction Industry, Sri Lanka (CCISL) will organise a South Asian Congress in order to discuss common problems faced by the region's construction industry and to find ways to be competitive with the rest of Asia and the world.

The Congress will be held under the theme "South Asia in the year 2020, Development Perspectives," with the participation of experienced speakers specialised in solid infrastructure, urban regeneration, rehabilitation and reconstruction, housing, environment and other relevant areas.

"The reason for us to select this theme was due to the fact that most countries in South Asia are having similar problems of varying degrees and if the region's construction industry is to be competitive with the rest of the Asia and the world, we should progress and develop rapidly using the latest technological innovations," CCISL President Surath Wickramasinghe said.

He said that the Chamber would invite Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamed to deliver the keynote speech at the Congress which is scheduled to be held in September next year.

"Countries such as Singapore and Malaysia have become giants in the construction industry making the maximum use of modern technology. Therefore, the Chamber considered that it would be timely to benefit by their experience and knowledge in order to promote the region's construction industry," Wickramasinghe said.

He said Foreign Affairs Minister Tyronne Fernando and Minister of Western Region Development M.H. Mohamed have pledged their fullest support towards the success of the Congress. Representatives of the construction sector from all the SAARC countries are also expected to participate in the Congress.
