Gunmen attack village take 20 hostages ILIGAN, Philippines, Tuesday (AFP) Armed gunmen stormed a remote farming village in the southern Philippines Tuesday and took about 20 people hostage, possibly in revenge for an earlier killing, police said. Some 30 gunmen entered the village of Dulag near the city of Iligan at dawn took hostage three local officials and 17 other people, police Senior Superintendent Roger Nuneza said. Brothers Bocari Alindo and Tungoy Alindo were suspected to be the leaders of the group, he said. Their brother was killed by armed men from Dulag recently, and it appeared the attack was in retaliation, he said. The mayor of Franklin Quijano Iligan, some 780 kilometers (483 miles) south of Manila, and other local officials were negotiating for the release of the hostages, Nuneza said. "We are going there with our troops to undertake negotiations for the safe and early release of the hostages," he added. |
