Collective responsibility essential for solving national issues - President

by Wyman Hettiarachchi

The country is ruled not by a single individual but by the joint efforts of the President, the Prime Minister, the Ministers and Members of Parliament. It is only on the realisation of this collective responsibility that a country ravaged by a two decades of war could be extricated out of this catastrophe, said President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga yesterday.

President Kumaratunga was addressing the Colombo University Convocation ceremony held at BMICH, Colombo.

The President stated that talks without a proper understanding of the war and also without attention to the past and the future of the country will not yield any lasting benefits.

She said the graduates should resolve to preserve their morals and humanitarian qualities in order to render an excellent service to humanity.

Around 15,000 students per year entering universities should be provided with opportunities to receive a sound knowledge of Information Technology and English Language, so that they could compete in the international job market, she observed.

Our main drawback in this regard is the lack of finance for which we cannot blame anybody. If the Government can find money, I shall provide them other physical resources needed to achieve this objective, assured the President.
