Bodyline launches community development projects to mark 10th anniversary

Bodyline (Private) Limited, one of the leading garment manufacturers in Sri Lanka celebrated 10 years of excellence recently. A joint venture between Mast Industries, USA, Triumph International, Germany and MAS Holdings (Pvt)Ltd, Sri Lanka, Bodyline specializes in the manufacture of ladies foundation apparel.

Incorporated in 1992 with BOI status, the 300,000 square feet state-of-the-art manufacturing plant provides employment to over 4,300 people with over 25,000 dependents and ranks as one of the largest foundation apparel manufacturers in South East Asia.

According to Bodyline General Manager Dinesh De Silva the company accounted for 2.6 per cent of Sri Lanka's total apparel exports and 1.3 per cent of Sri Lanka's total exports in the year 2001. Bodyline's turnover is predominantly generated from exports to the United States of America, which has the main market of its principal customers, Victoria's Secret Stores, Victoria's Secret Direct and Lane Bryant.

Bodyline's dedication to maintaining stringent quality, productivity standards and excellent employer-employee relations has resulted in winning various awards over the years including Victoria's Secret Standard of Excellence (1998), National Productivity Award (1999), Mast Quality Award (1999), Taiki Akimoto 5S Award (1999), Most Energy Efficient Installation Award (1999), National Quality Award (2000) and the Most Outstanding Exporter for the Year 2001 (Gold Award)" of the National Chamber of Exporters of Sri Lanka (NCESL).

The Joint Managing Director of Bodyline (Pvt) Ltd Dave Ranasinghe was recently adjudged the Best CEO of the Best Employee Involvement Organisation (2001/2002). Winning these key awards is a golden haul for Bodyline which commemorated its 10th anniversary on November 16 this year.

De Silva said Bodyline as a socially responsible organisation has contributed to society through various projects including educational scholarships for school-leavers in the locality and donated educational material and equipment to schools in the area. They have also donated equipment to develop the hospitals in Horana and Ingiriya. Under the Ranaviru Housing Project, Bodyline has also constructed houses for needy soldiers.

The company has implemented many community development projects to commemorate 10 years of outstanding performance including the construction of a new fully equipped dispensary for the Horana Hospital and Dental Clinic for the Pimbura Hospital at a cost of Rs.3 million.

Bodyline has also donated a Boxing Ring built to international standards to Vidyaratne University College, Horana and commenced renovation work on the clock tower at Agalawatte.

He said as a charitable deed which was practised throughout the past seven years, Bodyline has awarded more than 100 scholarships to deserving young school-leavers in Horana and Matugama to follow courses in the textile and apparel trade. The successful participants who acquire skills and knowledge through these courses could look forward to a rewarding career in the industry coupled with the potential for career development.

Bodyline and MAS Holdings as a Group also has a program where these talented young scholars are recruited into the group on a merit basis once they complete their courses.

Many of the former scholars have emerged as Senior Executives and Managers in the trade with excellent rewards and career development opportunities.

To-date, Bodyline has awarded about 100 scholarships worth Rs.1,000,000 and this year Rs. 215,000 has been invested to award 16 scholarships, he said.

He said Bodyline also felicitated 24 employees who had completed 10 years of outstanding service to the company at their anniversary celebrations on November 16. This serves as a motivational tool for all employees to give an excellent and committed service to the company.
