VoIP to cut international call charges by 50%

By Kushani Ratnayake

Charges for international calls would come down by at least 50% following the introduction of VoIP (Voice on Internet Protocol) in Sri Lanka, Chief Executive Officer and the Chairman of the board of directors of the Vocal Tec Communications Dr. Elon Ganor said. He said this will help increase the volume of calls due to affordability.

The company plans to introduce this concept to Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) and other organisations, he told the media in Colombo last week. Dr. Ganor was on a trade mission in Sri Lanka.

Vocal Tec being the pioneers to introduce VoIP (Voice on Internet protocol) in the United States is an Israel, based company. By using Internet Protocol it has developed a technology which can convert Data into Voice.

The aim of the Government is to de-regulate the telecom market, thus giving benefits to the people, with technologies such as VoIP.

Vocal Tec plans to offer field proven network services solutions including international and national long distance calling, exchange carrier services, trunk replacement and global hosted services including voice VPN, Conferencing, global call centre and calling card services.

Vocal Tec has offices in North America, Europe, Middle East, Asia and the Pacific Rim. IT is a public company with shares traded on the Nasdaq stock market under the symbol "VOCL".

The company focuses on the packet telephony industry. All efforts and resources are aimed at providing innovative solutions to generate revenue today, together with the coherent road map that anticipates new market needs and helps to ensure their customers a competitive edge looking forward, he said.

Vocal Tec solutions enable carriers and service Providers to capitalise on the revenue opportunities provided by increased demand for convergent voice and data services, while reducing capital and operational costs by utilising a more efficient network infrastructure.

The company is being used by various major Telecom operators in the world such as NTT Communications, Deutsche Telecom, China Telecom, ITXC and Communication Authority of Thailand. It powers more than 20% of the world's revenue generating international VoIP minutes.
