Manjula, Chandrika favourites for shuttle titles

Manjula Fernando and Chandrika de Silva are the top seeds in the men's and women's singles for the 50th senior National Badminton championships which begins at the Royal College gymnasium, Reid Avenue today. The tournament is conducted by the Sri Lanka Badminton Association and sponsored by Commercial Bank.

Udaya Wanasinghe is the bottom seed in the men's singles and the defending champion Niluka Karunaratne is the third seed. Amali Amarasinghe of Visakha Vidyalaya is the number two ranked player in the women's singles and another schoolgirl from Mahamaya College Thilini Jayasinghe is the third seed.

In the men's doubles event Udaya Wanasinghe and D. D. Ranasinghe are the top seeds followed by the combination of Duminda Jayakody and M. S. Fernando. In the women's doubles event Tharanga Nishanthi and Pameesha Dishanthi are the top seeds while Amali Amarasinghe and Thilini Jayasinghe are the bottom seeds.

The pair of Duminda Jayakody and Chandrika de Silva are the top seeds in the mixed doubles event. Deputy Minister of Health Sajith Premadasa will be the chief guest at the opening ceremony and N. G. Punchihewa secretary Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports will be the guest of honour.
