Stableford golf tourney on Saturday

Over 175 of the cream of Sri Lanka's golfing fraternity are expected to tee off next week at a Stableford tournament at the Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC) sponsored by Hayleys Consumer Products Ltd and the global consumer electronics giant Philips.

The tournament takes place on Saturday, November 30, and is part of an ambitious launch by Hayleys Consumer of a new range of sophisticated Philips home entertainment products that the company says will redefine high-end electronics in Sri Lanka.

Some of the country's biggest names in golf will vie for honours in several award categories offered by Hayleys-Philips at the tournament which also enables participants to accumulate points for the 2002-2003 Grand Prix, RCGC Captain Lalith Ramanayake said.

Hayleys Consumer Director Rizvi Zaheed said: "We would be hard-pressed to find a better target market for the Philips high-end products than the members of the RCGC. These new products are for true connoisseurs of audio and video entertainment, and the profile of participants at the Stableford Tournament is a perfect match of the consumer we have in mind."The Secretary of RCGC, Lionel Almeida said the tournament will be over 18 holes and open to all members of the men's section having a current RCGC handicap. The tournament will be conducted in four Divisions, with Division A comprising of players whose handicaps range from 0-9, Division B with handicaps of 10-18, Division C with handicaps of 19-28 and a separate division for seniors, he explained. "In the event of a tie, the winner will be adjudged on the basis of the best Stableford score over the back nine," he said.

Hayleys-Philips will award Trophies to the winner and the runner-up of each handicap group. Among the top prizes on offer are a Philips 29" Flat Screen TV (for hole in one - 16th hole), and two Philips Discman portable CD players (for nearest to the pin - 9th hole and longest drive - 8th hole), Zaheed said. As a mark of appreciation to competitors who participate in the tournament, Hayleys - Philips will conduct a Business Card draw which will award an automatic shaver, give away surprise gifts and will also provide every competitor with a generous 20 per cent discount voucher on all Philips products at Hayleys Showrooms.

Established in 1879, the Royal Colombo Golf Club claims to be the third oldest golfing club in the world and boasts of one of the finest courses in the Asian Region.
