Paddy lands returned to Muslims

by A. H. M. Farook

Lands owned by Muslims but forcibly occupied by the LTTE 10 years ago in Alinchipothana village in the Polonnaruwa district were returned to them for paddy cultivation recently.

This followed talks Minister Rauff Hakeem had with LTTE leaders who participated at the second round of peace talks held in Thailand recently.

Minister Hakeem participated at the inaugural ploughing ceremony held at the village recently amidst a gathering of Muslims and Tamils from Alinchipotana.

The minister met regional LTTE leaders in Thailand and urged them to return the lands owned by Muslims in the North East.

Minister Hakeem said that a follow-up meeting with the LTTE leadership will be held shortly in Kilinochchi to discuss resettling the displaced and bringing back normalcy into these areas.

"For resettlement and rehabilitation purposes, we need to establish the infrastructure facilities and other relevant matters which will be discussed at the next Aid Group meeting in Oslo," Hakeem said.
