Listen to us too, councillors tell minister

The opposition UNP group in the Western Provincial Council met Western Region Development Minister M. H. Mohamed at his office on Monday and requested him to pay attention to their ideas and views in formulating development programmes for the region.

During the discussions, the Councillors pointed out that people often sought solutions to problems from them rather than Parliamentarians because they had much closer links with the people and requested the Minister to strengthen their hands by giving due attention to their views in formulating development plans, a Ministry release said.

They also requested the Minister to broach this idea to other Ministers as well so that they too would sound Provincial Councillors in the districts in formulating their own development plans.

Mohamed said this year's budget had curtailed financial allocations to Provincial Councils due to various malpractices and bad financial management taken place during the tenure of the previous regime.

The UNP group was led by Western Provincial Council Opposition Leader Kithsiri Kahatapitiya.

Ministry Additional Secretary Ananda Kodituwakku, Minister's Private Secretary Rehab J. Arif and other Ministry officials were also present.
