Senior Kurunegala lawyer dies

Benjamin Ratnayake JPUM and Attorney-at-Law passed away on the afternoon of November 25th at his residence where he was ailing for sometime.

Mr. Ratnayake was the second son of the late D.A.B. Ratnayake former Mayor and Crown Proctor of Kurunegala and of Mrs. Anne B. Ratnayake.

Benjamin Ratnayake was an eminent criminal lawyer and enjoyed a wide practice in the Wayamba province. He was a member of the municipal council of Kurunegala for a number of years. He was also the president of the Bar Association of Kurunegala.

Mr. Ratnayake was a bachelor and leaves four younger brothers, three of whom are lawyers namely Messrs Aloy Ratnayake PC, Everard Ratnayake, Luke Ratnayake and another brother Asoka Peter Ratnayake who was a teacher, and five sisters Mrs. Iranganie Wettewa, Mrs. Augusta Niles, Miss Constance Ratnayake, Mrs. Shirani de Alwis and Miss Angela Ratnayake. An elder brother Anton Ratnayake and younger sister Antoinette White predeceased him.

Benjamin Ratnayake had outlived the biblical span of three Score and Ten and was aged Seventy one years and ten months. His funeral will be at Kurunegala and the funeral arrangements will be notified later.
