National Action Plan on combating land degradation presented

by Florence Wickramage

Sri Lanka presented its National Action Plan on Combating Land Degradation at the Review Meeting of the UN Convention on Combating Desertification which concluded in Rome on November 22.

Sri Lanka was represented by the Environment and Natural Resources Ministry's Additional Secretary A.H.N.Jayasekera and Director, Natural Resources I. H. K. Mahanama. One hundred and eighty five countries participated in the two week long meeting which began on November 11th.

Our country is not affected by desertification as in the case of other countries in the Asian Region. As such Sri Lanka's priority would be to address land degradation. Mahanama expressed hope that several components identified in the National Plan would receive foreign funding. The Environment and Natural Resources Ministry would cooperate with other affiliated Ministries to implement the national action plan which is considered a national activity.

The Sri Lanka National Action Plan was completed with support from the UNDP, Global Members and the Ministry's EAIP project, Mr. Mahanama said.
