Over 15,000 excess teachers in Western Province

by Manjula Fernando

Schools in the Western province are having an excess of over 15,000 teachers, a high level educational meeting chaired by Minister Dr.Karunasena Kodituwakku was told recently.

The surplus of teachers is mostly in the popular and National schools governed by the Ministry while there is a shortage in most schools under the provincial councils, Western Province educational authorities said.

The meeting, attended by the officials of the line ministry, Chief Ministers and all provincial educational officers was conveyed to discuss the priority issues concerning the education sector so as to call for everyone's cooperation to overcome most critical issues identified as, shortage of Advanced Level English Medium teachers, uneven distribution of teachers between provincial and national schools and the congestion in urban popular schools.

Minister Kodituwakku requested co-operation from the provincial authorities to fill the existing vacancies in the schools under their purview after giving them an assurance that all excess teachers in national schools will be transferred with immediate effect. A national plan is to be formulated for teacher transfers in order to overcome practical difficulties and ensure an effective transfer scheme free of political interference in future. For the issue of North Central volunteer teachers, the Minister promised to recruit those who fulfil necessary qualifications as English and IT teachers under the ADB and World Bank projects next year.
