Man killed after attack on Nepali king's adviser

KATHMANDU, Nov 13 (Reuters) - Nepali soldiers shot dead a suspected Maoist rebel in Kathmandu on Wednesday after he threw a a bomb at the home of a top adviser to King Gyanendra, an army official said.

The man was killed outside the official residence of Keshar Jung Rayamajhi, chief of the state council, a principal advisory body to the king, the army official told Reuters.

The bomb did not go off. It was not immediately known if Rayamajhi was at home at the time.

The attack took place on the last day of a three-day general strike called by the Maoist rebels to protest against the king's dismissal of the elected government last month.

"A rebel was shot dead when he tried to flee after throwing a bomb inside the building's compound," the official said.

"The bomb was defused by soldiers before it exploded."

Security has been tightened throughout the country during the strike that began on Monday and forced schools, industries and businesses to shut.

Strike calls by the rebels are normally heeded because the guerrillas have in the past staged revenge attacks against those who ignored the protest.

The rebels have been fighting since 1996 to topple the constitutional monarchy and set up a one-party communist republic in the mountainous Hindu kingdom.

The rebels called the strike to protest against what they called King Gyanendra's "regressive" decision to dismiss Sher Bahadur Deuba as prime minister for seeking to delay national elections because of guerrilla threats to disrupt the vote.

The king fired Deuba, branding him incompetent, and appointed a staunch monarchist, Lokendra Bahadur Chand, as interim prime minister. Chand has promised to hold elections but set no date.

More than 7,100 people have been killed in the revolt that has badly hurt the aid-dependent economy and crippled tourism, a key source of income.
