* Formulating and reformulating of sectoral policies and plans based on national policies in respect of power and energy.

* Investigation, planning and co-ordination of energy matters

* Development of a sound, adequate and uniform electricity policy for the control, regulation and utilisation of national power resources.

* Development of a sound, adequate and uniform petroleum policy for the control, regulation and utilisation of national power and resources.

* Providing policy and general administration guidance and direction in respect of the following functions under its purview:

A. Sector in general and specially to the department and statutory institutions falling under its purview. B. Formulation of programs and projects in respect of power and energy.

Development and uses of electricity, generation, transmission, distribution and issue of electricity licences and administering the Electricity Act. Exploring,production and refining of petroleum products distribution and making gas from resources such as petroleum products and coal.
