Bangar's patient 77 lifts India CALCUTTA, India, Wednesday (Reuters) - Opener Sanjay Bangar top-scored with a patient 77 to lift India to 275 for six wickets at stumps on the first day of the third and final test against West Indies on Wednesday. Bangar, dropped on five, hit his third test fifty and put on 77 runs for the fifth wicket with Vangipurappu Laxman to shore up the innings after the dismissal of their top four batsmen had reduced India to 165-4 at the stroke of tea. He was out late in the final session, driving fast bowler Cameron Cuffy to cover to end his 201-ball knock lasting well over five hours. He hit 13 fours. Laxman went to make 48. At the close, Parthiv Patel and Harbhajan Singh were together as India recovered in the final session after electing to bat at the Eden Gardens. A four-pronged West Indies pace attack gave their struggling side their best day of the series as the top four Indian batsmen all failed to reach 50. Opener Virender Sehwag, who made an aggressive run-a-ball 35, Sachin Tendulkar (36) and Rahul Dravid (14) fell to pace while captain Saurav Ganguly (30) succumbed to his opposite number Carl Hooper's off-spin. India lead the series 2-0. |
