Protestors demand access to High Security Zone

by Jayantha Sri Nissanka

About 1500 people yesterday marched from Mallagam in Kankasanthurai to the Thelippale Divisional Secretariat demanding that they be resettled in their native places in the High Security Zone, TULF MP Mavai Senadhiraja told the Daily News.

They handed over a memorandum to the Thilippale Assistant Government Agent, addressed to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe urging the Government to address their problem urgently.

The protest march had been organised by the Consortium of Non Governmental Organisations and Displaced Persons Union. "TNA MPs participated as a mark of solidarity in the march," Senadhiraja said.

Senadhiraja said that he himself is a displaced person. "I want to resettle in my native place Mawathapuram before I die," he said.

The protestors said they want to resettle in Palali, Kankasanthurai, Tiletti, Miletti, Keerimale, etc.

TNA MPs Mavai Senadhiraja, Gajendra Ponnambalam, Raviraj A.Vinayagamoorthi and Suwajilingam participated in the march.

"We will continue to agitate until the Government gives us a satisfactory answer. About 23,000 families have been displaced due to the demarcation of High Security Zones since 1985," Senadhiraja added.
