Lanka Tractors Ltd. violated workers' human rights, says Rajapakse

Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapakse alleged that Lanka Tractors Ltd by suspending the services of its remaining 131 workers and declaring its premises out of bounds for them had clearly violated the human rights of these workers.

The government's silence in the face of this arbitrary action by the company management is regrettable, he said.

Rajapakse said this when the company workers who had lost their jobs met him at his office recently.

According to a press release issued by the opposition leader's office, Rajapakse had appealed to the government to reinstate the workers and safeguard their jobs without trying to satisfy its friendly businessmen who were greedily eyeing profitable state institutions and business concerns.

Tracing the history of Lanka Tractors Ltd, Rajapakse said its forerunner Sri Lanka State Trading (Tractor) Corporation was set up by late Minister T. B. Ilangaratne in 1970 to uplift the rural agricultural economy by providing agricultural equipment to farmers at reasonable price.

In spite of being a profitable concern, it was privatised under the then governments Privatisation Act No 23 of 1987.

The workers who met the opposition leader were led by T. M. Thilakasiri and H. Hemapala, President and Secretary respectively of the Sri Lanka Nidahas Seveka Sangamaya, Lanka Tractors Ltd Branch.
