Pushpakumara wins silver

BANGKOK. Wednesday. Manoj Pushpakumara gave Sri Lanka its first medal on the third day of competition at the tenth Asian Junior track and field meet when he came second in the boys 400 metres final at the Thamasha University Stadium in Bangkok yesterday.

Running in lane five Pushpakumara was among the top three from the start and accelerated during the last 25 metres to finish with a timing of 47.38 seconds. Japan's Yamaguchi won the gold medal with a timing of 47.11 seconds and India's Marandi Sudham took the bronze medal clocking 47.93 seconds.

Pushpakumara who has also qualified to run in the boys 800 metres final is a product of Ratnayake MMV Menikhinna and was selected as the most outstanding athlete at the recent National School Games held at the Sugathadasa Stadium, Colombo.

Meanwhile Joy Danushka Perera of De Mazenod College Kandana was placed sixth in the boys 200 metres final with a timing of 21.50 seconds Japan's Tahira Sitiji won the gold medal in this event with a timing of 21.03 seconds.

Sri Lanka's Tharanga Vinodani was placed sixth in the girls high jump with a performance of 1.65 metres. China's Lee Rang won the gold medal in this event with an effort of 1.79 metres.

Sri Lanka's middle distance runner Gayanthika Thushari of Sooriyawewa National School was pushed to the ninth place in the girls 1500 metres event with a timing of 4 minutes 56.85 seconds. Nejayoo Yenvi of Korea won the gold medal with a timing of 4 minutes 27.15 seconds. In addition Danushka Thabrew came eighth out of 20 competitors in the boys long jump with a performance of 7.16 metres.

Ravindra Radhishan was placed ninth out of ten competitors in the boys decathlon with a total of 5776 points. China's Hong Yan won the gold medal in this event with a total of 7471 points.
