by Asanga Warnakulasuriya Special provisions will be made in next month's budget to develop the handicraft industry, Enterprise Development, Industrial Policy and Investment Promotion Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris said on Tuesday. Speaking at the opening of Tun Path Rata, a handicraft exhibition organised by the National Craft Council (NCC), the minister rated the creativity of the community as one of the greatest strengths in the country's economy. "Although Sri Lanka is facing an economic setback, we will take steps in the budget to ensure a brighter future for the craftsmen," the Minister said. NCC Chairman Buddhi Keerthisena said the exhibition was a success because of Government backing. "We hope the support will continue in the coming years," he said. Tun Path Rata was organised to help craftsmen to bring their creations to the market. The exhibition began on October 29 at the Lionel Wendt and ends today. |
