Sama Viharaya conducts free education for 50 children

by Talawa group correspondent

"Sama Vihara Free Education Foundation" affiliated to Anuradhapura Sama Viharaya is conducting an additional free education programme for 50 poor, but intelligent children in the Anuradhapura area.

These children, 28 girls and 22 boys, were chosen on recommendations of the heads of schools in the area. These students in grade 10 and 11 are unable to afford education at tutories.

The classes in Maths, English and Science are conducted every Saturday between 8.30 a.m. and 12.30 p.m. by P. B. S. Herath.

B. K. L. Dias, Mayor of Anuradhapura at the inauguration of the programme said "Sama Viharaya Anuradhapura has set an example by utilizing the buildings constructed by the devotee for a very useful programme for the poorerst of the poor. It is best to use for such a thing than letting them idle."

The duty of the Maha Sangha is not only preaching of Dhamma or meditation but also helping the poor and the helpless in their basic needs. As a villager I saw the difficulties the villagers undergo in giving a good education to their intelligent and clever children. This prompted me to launch this program, Venerable Maha Wilachchiye Wimala thera Chief Prelate of Sama Viharaya and the patron of the Foundation said.

Venerable thera requested philanthropists to donate clothes, shoes, books and finances for these poor children as they cannot even afford bus-fares to Anuradhapura. He wants any donation to be sent to Sama Viharaya opposite Anuradhapura Municipal Council personally or by post.
