Over 10,000 youth participate at Nipunatha exhibition

by Kegalle Special Correspondent

An exhibition was held at Kegalle Balika Maha Vidyalaya under `2002 Nipunatha Program' conducted by the Ministry of Tertiary Education and Training on October 26 and 27.

The exhibition was opened by the Minister of Tertiary Education and Training Kabeer Hasheem on October 26. He was accompanied by Wayamba Development Minister Jayatilake Podinilame. A large number of students and parents participated at the opening ceremony.

At the opening of the exhibition, Minister Kabeer Hasheem said the aim of the Nipunatha 2002 program is to provide training in various professions to the unemployed youth.

It is also intended to seek employment for the youth who have followed or undergone training courses in the technical institutions in the past and are awaiting employment.

He said that the UNF government hopes to provide vocational training for over seven thousand senior students in the Kegalle district alone in 18 training centres. The government will provide necessary guidance for the unemployed youth to commence minor business ventures. Those who prefer to start self-employment projects will be provided with a convenient loan scheme.

This is the first occasion that a program of this nature under the guidance of the Ministry of Tertiary Education and Training has been commenced. This program will be extended to all other 24 districts in the island, Minister Kabeer said.

Over 10,000 youth participated at the exhibition. Over 110 stalls were displayed covering information technology, teacher training programs, public development, beauty culture, food technology, media, agricultural training, rubber development and skills development.

Minister of Labour Mahinda Samarasinghe said that for those who are interested in foreign employment, a training to acquire a fair knowledge pertaining to such employment will be provided. Wayamba Development Minister Jayatilake Podinilame and several others addressed the gathering. On the last day of the Exhibition Minister of Sports Johnston Fernando also participated.
