News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | Govt must ensure security of all, says President by Ranil Wijayapala President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga said the PA as a party which laid the foundation for lasting peace was pleased with the peace process initiated by the Government. President Kumaratunga however warned that the Government should be aware of the boundaries of peace. Addressing the 5th delegates conference of the Sri Lanka Nidahas Sevaka Sangamaya at New Town Hall, Colombo, the President said the Government should ensure the security of all communities when establishing lasting peace. The President said that unlike the present Government, the People's Alliance had a clear vision about the boundaries of peace. "We are against the establishment of Tamil Eelam and division of the country in our peace endeavours," the President added. "We should not offer things that Prabhakaran could not win through weapons in the name of peace." She said PA leaders sacrificed their lives to lay the foundation for peace and the party is committed to bring peace to the country. The President said the Government should be aware of the "serious situation" in the East. The LTTE has recruited more cadres to increase their strength to 10,000, the highest number they ever had." She said that in the same way the Government is taking prompt action to solve the LTTE's problems, it should also look into the grievances of people in the South. The President told the gathering that she is not against Constitutional amendments on the dissolution of Parliament, but added that she cannot agree with proposals by the Government to clip her powers as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. She vowed to remain in power on the mandate given by the people to fulfil their aspirations. |
