IDs for plantation workers

The Ministry of Central Region Development in association with the Kandy Friendship Foundation and the Department of Registration of Persons will issue National Identity Cards to plantation workers in eight estates in the Nawalapitiya-Kataboola areas at the Urban Council Hall, Nawalapitiya on October 19 at 10 am. This will be done on the request of Central Region Development Minister Tissa Attanayake.

The National Identity Cards will be of immense benefit to estate workers attending work at places where their identity cards are required, Attanayake told the Daily News.

 

57th United Nations Day

The United Nations Association of Sri Lanka which has been observing UN Day from its inception in 1950 will commemorate the event this year too. The ceremony will be held at the John de Silva Memorial Theatre, Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha, Colombo on October 19 at 3 p.m, states Association Secretary General Kumaran Fernando. Minister for Education and Cultural Affairs Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku will be the chief guest.

Members of the Diplomatic Corps, representatives of United Nations Agencies in Sri Lanka, United Nations Information Centre representative and schoolchildren are expected to participate.

Awards will be given to winners of the Best UNA Study Circles, Inter schools annual competitions in oratory, essay, general knowledge on the UN and Literary compositions. Challenge trophies and certificates will be presented to the all island Best Ten UNA Study Circles and the teachers in charge.

From among the Best Study Circles for 2001, K.G. Kushika Mandakini a student from Bandarawela Sri Devananda Vidyalaya, Welimada, selected as the best speaker will address the UN Day observance meeting.

Several cultural items will be presented by the dance troupe of Museaus College, the upcoming 'Choro Benedicte' choral group, and the oriental dance troupe of Ananda College, Colombo. The ceremony will conclude with the drawing of a lottery for 50 prizes to be awarded to the students attending the celebration and a ceremonial finale.

 

Silver jubilee

The Scout Cubs of Vidyartha College, Kandy will celebrate its Silver Jubilee today with activities in Kandy to mark the occasion.

At 8.15 a.m. over 1,100 Cubs from schools in the Kandy district will assemble at Vidyartha College and march to the Bogambara Stadium through Kandy streets carrying banners and placards depicting the virtues of scouting.

The 1100 cubs will participate in games in groups of 10 and five. Winning groups will be awarded certificates.

There will competitions like balancing act, creeping through the tunnel, somersaulting, puzzles, singing, cubs laws, and other contests. Winners will receive certificates.

There will be also be an open air entertainment show featuring cubs. The chief guest will be Secretary to the Ministry of Education and Industries H.M. Herath Abeyweera.

The proceedings will conclude at 3.30 p.m. with the distribution of awards. Chief Commissioner for Scout Cubs Gamini Somatillake will be present.

 

Quarters needs repairs

The postmaster's quarters at the Avissawella post office is in a state of disrepair.

The walls are exposed to elements and cracked everywhere. The roof is dilapidated and tiles broken.

The rainwater flows into the quarters. This has been closed for the past 10 years without renovation.

 

Over 1,800 schools function in NEP

Thousand eight hundred and twenty five national and provincial schools are functioning in the North East Province out of a total of 1987 schools with 162 schools being temporarily closed.

These schools are located in 24 zones in the eight districts - Ampara, Batticaloa, Trincomalee, Jaffna, Mannar, Kilinochchi, Mullaithivu and Vavuniya. Under the 24 zonal education offices there are 74 education divisions.

The number of girls schools totalling 49 exceed the number of boys' schools which total 27. The rest are mixed schools.

There are also six private schools in the Jaffna district and the student population of all the schools total 643,569.

 

Teen seeks help

U.L. Nuwanthika Priyadarsani (15) of No. 6, Molligodawatta, Hapugala, Wakwella, Galle, who has a spinal deformity needs Rs. 266,200 for surgery. according to Dr. Vasantha Perera, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon of the National Hospital, Colombo.
