The Australian Government in association with the Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited (ANZ), Citibank, N. A. and Export Finance and Insurance Corporation (EFIC) has agreed to provide a sum of Rs. 7,176 million for the implementation of the Phase II of the Integrated Water Supply Scheme for Eastern Coastal Areas of Ampara District under two loan agreements. The first loan of Japanese Yen 6,278 million (approximately Rs. 5,022 million) will be provided by the Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited (ANZ) and Citibank International from Export Finance and Insurance Corporation (EFIC) of Australia. The second loan in a sum of Rs. 2,154 million under a commercial finance facility will be provided by Citibank N.A. Colombo and syndicate banks. The objective of the project is to provide safe drinking water to a population of 280,000 in the Eastern Coastal area of the Ampara District. The project will contribute to reduce the water borne diseases and improve the quality of life of people living in the area. The proceeds of the loan will be utilized to construct water treatment faculties to supply 12 million gallons of treated water per day through a 238 km distribution network. The project area covers Nintavur, Addapalam, Addalaichenai, Palamunai, Oluvil, Deegavapi, Akkaraipattu, Pattiyadipitti, Pallikudiyuruppu, Alim Nagar, Alayadiwembu, Maruthamunai, Neelavanai, Thuraineelavanai, Pandiruppu, Irakkamam, Varippathanchanai, Kuduvil, Damana, Muwangala, Higurana, Uhana, Unit 21, Weeragoda, Komarigama, Komariya, Tissapura, Udayapura, Navithanveli, Central Camp, Malwatte, Valathapittiya and Kanapathipuram. The two agreements were signed by Charitha Ratwatte, Secretary, Ministry of Finance on behalf of the Government of Sri Lanka, Kai Preugschat, Head of Structured Export Finance on behalf of Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited (ANZ), Ms. Prashanti Kanagasabai, Senior Trade Representative, Australian Trade Commission (AUSTRADE) on behalf of Export Finance and Insurance Corporation (EFIC) of Australia and Kapila Jayawardena, Country Head/CEO on behalf of Citibank, Colombo at the Ministry of Finance on October 10. |
