Chandrakanthi creates major upset

Policewoman Mallika Chandrakanthi created a major upset at the fourth annual LSR International Marathon by winning the women's open event for the fourth successive year. The men's event was won by Sri Lanka Army's Ajith Bandara.

Chandrakanthi who was placed 80th in the recently concluded World Cup marathon was the sole competitor for this event and returned a time of 3 hours 09: 17 seconds.

The Men's half marathon was evenly fought and finally Asela Bandara of Sri Lanka Air Force beat the Kenyan John Kelai in a last minute sprint to win the title. The Kenyan runner who has won the Kenyan national half marathon said that the climate, hills, weather and the route was ideal for a marathon and said more events should be conducted on this course. How ever he said that there was a mix up in the finish as the markings were not clear.
