The Department of Buddhist Affairs will build a Poyage at the Gal Viharaya, Polonnaruwa to facilitate vinayakarma activities of the Maha Sangha. This follows a directive issued by Buddhasasana, Justice, Law Reform and National Integration Minister, W. J. M. Lokubandara to the Commissioner of Buddhist Affairs, H. W. D. Sunil, a ministry release said yesterday. Lokubandara directed this on a request by Wendaruwe Upali Nayaka Thera, Viharahdhipathi of the Gal Viharaya when he attended a meeting at the Charikaramaya, Colombo to finalise plans for building a Bhikku Infirmary at Pupuressa, Galaha recently. Ministers Karu Jayasuriya, Lokubandara, Lakshman Kiriella and P. Dayaratne also attended this meeting graced by the Maha Sangha led by the Most Ven. Udugama Buddharakkhita Maha Nayaka Thera of the Asgiriya Chapter. The release said the Asgiriya prelate too supported this request and called upon the minister to provide a temporary building for bhikkhus at the Gal Viharaya to perform vinayakarma until a permanent poyage was constructed. Diyawadana Nilame Neranjan Wijeyeratne who also attended this meeting said models of Gal Viharaya statues found at Bakamuna were at the mercy of two bands of treasure hunters frequenting the Elahera region. Security measures should be put in place before they are destroyed by these gangs. He also requested the minister to appoint a bhikku to administer the Watadageya in Medirigiriya which is neglected. |
