Kuwait delegation assures Lankan workers' safety

Over 160,000 skilled and unskilled Sri Lankan workers are employed in Kuwait. Kuwait is second among the countries employing Sri Lankan labour, Lal Dharmapriya Gamage, Minister Assisting Foreign Affairs said.

The Minister who met a delegation of the National Assembly of Kuwait on a visit to Sri Lanka, also drew the delegates' attention to the social and welfare facilities of Sri Lankan employees. Delegation leader Al-Foraision, MP agreed to ensure Sri Lankan workers' safety and invited a ministerial team to visit Kuwait to study the position further. Gamage recalled important agreements like the Prevention of Double Taxation and Evasion of Taxation between Sri Lanka and Kuwait.

The Minister thanked for the letter by Al-Jabir-Al Saban, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs wishing Foreign Minister Tyronne Fernando early recovery, Gamage said. Minister Fernando was improving after the surgery and hoped he would resume duties soon.

These were revealed at a conference held at the Parliamentary Complex chaired by Speaker Joseph Michael Perera to meet the visiting Kuwait Parliamentary delegation and member of the Foreign Ministry Parliamentary Advisory Committee and Kuwait - Sri Lanka Parliamentary Friendship Association.

Gamini Lokuge, Minister of Tourism, secretary Ministry of Tourism, Secretary to the Ministry Assisting Foreign Affairs and officials of the Foreign Employment Bureau, Tourist Board and Ministry of Foreign Affairs were also present.

Bilateral issues were discussed. The Kuwait delegates assured to promote Sri Lanka as a tourist location in their country.

The delegation expressed willingness to promote investment to Sri Lanka.

They also exchanged views on cooperation in trade, investment, economic assistance and strengthening of cooperation in education and training.

Both parties agreed to expedite the meeting of the Sri Lanka-Kuwait Joint Committee on Trade.

The special achievement at this conference was to arrive at consensus on issues relating to expatriate workers, tourist trade between the two countries, bilateral air services, Kuwait assistance to Sri Lanka and investment.

The participation of officials of the Foreign Ministry and other ministries and departments on a proposal by Gamage was a significant feature.

Delegates of both parties expressed satisfaction for being able to find solutions to bilateral issues.

The Kuwait delegation comprised Al-Foraision M.P. and Leader, Abdul Azees, Abdul Latin Al-Mutawa Saad Halah Tham, Adnon Said Abdul-Sameed (Members of Parliament) and Abdulla Hady Al-Ajimi and Seyab Mohamed Al-Doibani (Secretaries).
