by Trincomalee correspondent Director Hope for Children Dr. Robert Parsons visited Trincomalee and inspected the pre-schools at Athimoddai, Adampoddai, Anpuvalipuram and Poompuhar. He also visited the Nilaveli resettlement of Vanni returnees, Kappalthurai resettlement and Kanniya resettlement. Later Dr. Parsons had a discussion with representatives of several partner organisations working with Hope for Children in Trincomalee district at the Methodist Church premises. Sri Lanka representative of Hope for Children Tyrrell Cooray said children are the asset of the country. Any programme formulated by partner organisations should focus on the development and welfare of the children who inherit the future. President Trincomalee District NGO consortium T. Thavasilingam brought to the notice of the gathering the suffering of children in refugee and welfare camps. Children born in the camps grow up in the camps and they know nothing about the other side of the world other than camp culture. Most of the children in uncleared areas do not attend schools due to poverty and non existence of schools. What is accessible to the people in other provinces are deprived to the people in the North East Province specially in LTTE held areas. Dr. Robert Parsons said the peace process has just started and it will take several years to achieve peace and solution to the problems. "We should not remain idle. We must continue our programmes focusing on the welfare and rehabilitation of children." He said partner organisations should work hard to implement programmes assisting the affected children in the area. Dr. E. G. Gnanakunalan, Mrs. Ranji Balasingham, O. L. M. Ismail and a few others also spoke. |
