Postal department will not be peoplised

by Kalutara Group correspondent

The UNF government will never peoplise the postal department and the workers can have their future prospects without any fear, said Imthiaz Bakeer Markar, Minister of Mass Communication while addressing a gathering in Kalutara Town Hall premises to celebrate the World Postal Day on October 9.

He said that the previous regime was running the postal department at an annual loss of Rs. 973 million. Due to this they decided to peoplise the department or to sell it. The employers lost faith and opposed the proposal.

However after Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe took over he ruled out the decision to peoplise or sell the department and decided to manage it even in difficulty.

Commemorating the Postal Day is not to be restricted to the Postal service only. Instead it is expected to activate a process based on the postal service to widen the entire communication field. The objective of this year's World Postal Day is to develop communication and bring its tangible benefits to the people in mass communication, said the Minister. Lands Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne said that the productivity in the postal service should be improved to bring maximum benefit to the people.

The Postmaster General W.M. Piyasena said to promote the new identity of the postal service, special attention has been paid to school children, who are the future assets of this country.

Western Province Governor Alavi Mowlana, the Kalutara Urban Council Chairman W.T.P. Ariyaratne and Secretary to the Independent Trade Union K.S Weerasekara also spoke.
