Landslide warnings were ignored - Geologist

by Ananda Kannangara

Ignoring repeated warnings on landslide occurrences and many other geological disasters made by the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) to the residents in Puwakgahawela, Balangoda resulted in the sudden loss of human lives last week, NBRO, Geologist Prasanna Dharmasena told the 'Daily News'.

"According to several on the spot researches on land disasters and other environmental changes carried out by us in the Balangoda area where the country's worst landslide occurred last week, we informed the residents as well as other authorised officials time to time about the unstable situation", he said.

He said that act such as clearing hill slopes for agricultural purposes, digging the earth for purposes of constructing houses and set fire to forests for hunting purposes are the main causes for land slides.
