The Government will hold two international conferences of donor organisations in Japan and Norway to obtain resources for the humanitarian and development work in the North and East. The 'mini' pledging conference where only the bi-lateral donor agencies will be invited is expected to be held in Oslo by the end of November or Early December. The second conference to be held on a larger scale will be in Tokyo five months later. Cabinet Spokesman Prof.G.L.Peiris who visited Japan last week to seek assistance for the North and East development and humanitarian activities, said response from the Japanese Government had been very encouraging. Japan has pledged aid worth half a million US dollars for community development projects. A drinking water project funded by Japan is in progress in Vavuniya. MF/RM |
