By Pradeep Sudarshana

The INFOTEL 2002 exhibition under the theme "Envisioning an e-nation" was opened by Ravi Karunanayke, Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs on Wednesday evening at the Exhibition and Convention centre. Declared a national event by the government in view of its great importance INFOTEL 2002 focuses local and foreign attention on Sri Lanka's potential as an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) development hub.

Most of the foreign IT experts now in the country to attend the INFOTEL exhibition expressed tremendous optimism over the rapid development of ICT in the country and they hope to invest more money on it.

The exhibition will continue till October 12. The increased number of exhibitors at this year's exhibition is a significant feature. INFOTEL, a brainchild of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe when he was Minister of Industries, Science and Technology in 1992 has gone from strength to strength. Sir Arthur C. Clarke, Prof. V. Samaranayake, Chairman of INFOTEL, David Dominic, Executive Director of INFOTEL and others participated.
