Call to develop new technology for industries

In order to keep pace with the global trend it has become incumbent on the Ministry of Irrigation and Water Management to adopt new technology by the infusion of more capital if we are to develop our plantation, fisheries and agricultural industries so that the commodities we produce will have a distinct price advantage by being a value added product.

In this way these products will command a higher price and will have a better demand in the international market. This will not only assist us to boost production but also improve the village economy gradually said Minister of Industries Rohitha Bogollagama.

Minister Bogollagama, was the chief guest at the fifth day inauguration of the Mahaweli Mahima sponsored by the Ministry of Irrigation and Water Management at Galnewa on October 5, at which Jayawickrema Perera was also present.

Tracing the history of the Mahaweli he said that the project was first initiated by the late Minister Gamini Dissanayke under the supervision of the late President J. R. Jayewardene for which the infrastructure facilities were provided for the development of these areas.

It is this project that Minister Jayawickrema Perera is now handling. His task today is to see that the water that flows from upcountry is distributed evenly to locations such as Thambuthagama, Anuradhapura, Kalawewa and Polonnaruwa settlement areas which are in the low-lying areas in the dry zone.

The present statistics of the Gross National Product show a growth of only 3% to 4% throughout but we will have to strive to improve it to the 10% level which is the target expected by the government.

He said we must focus our attention on some sustainable development program by identifying areas district-wise and region-wise and forge ahead with an accelerated development program which is the aim of the government.
