110 volleyball courts for Kandy district by our Kandy sports correspondent The Kandy District Sports Development Foundation under the chairmanship of the Minister of Central Region Development Tissa Attanayake has initiated plans to construct 110 volleyball courts in the 22 divisions of the Divisional Secretary's in the Kandy district. Co-ordinating Secretary to the Minister of Central Province Region Development Mr. Battappola told the Daily News that each AGA's Division will be provided with five volleyball courts and a sum of Rs. 5,000 will be allocated for the construction of each volleyball court. The Kandy District Sports Development Foundation will liaise with the respective Divisional Secretaries and the chairman of the local authority of the area to obtain suitable land for this purpose.Volleyball has been always identified as a rural sport which does not require expensive gear or equipment to play. All what is required is a piece of small land and a net with two posts and a ball. This sport is extremely popular among schools in the rural areas in the Kandy District. This game could be seen played even on paddy fields after harvests till the field is required for ploughing for the next planting. This move by the Kandy District Sports Development Foundation and Minister Tissa Attanayake must be lauded as this game could spread to distant areas like Meemure, Hasalaka, Hunnasgiriya, and Hewaheta areas where there is hardly any sport at competitive level due to lack of facilities. |
