Former SLMP member debunks President's claim Premasiri Perera, former member of the Sri Lanka Mahajana Pakshaya and close associate of Vijaya and Chandrika Kumaratunga, has debunked the claim made by the President regarding the admission of her son Vimukthi to Royal College saying that the question of admission to Royal was never in question since at the relevant time the President was settled in London where she had made arrangements for her son's education. Recounting the circumstances surrounding the school admission he said that Vimukthi's was not the only application that was rejected. There was a host of other children who failed to gain admission due to the "distance rule". A parent from Barnes Place filed a court case challenging the school's decision and the School Board suspended a decision on the appeals pending the court ruling. Perera said this was the time that Kumaratunga due to friction with her mother was living in a home in Borella which happened to be close to the D.S. Senanayake College. However, in her application for school admission of her son she had given the Rosemead Place address. This was even further in distance to the Barnes place address where the parents had filed their case. In the meantime Perera states, Vijaya Kumaratunga had made arrangements to admit his son to D. S. Senanayake and he (Perera) was personally aware that Vijaya was planning to meet the Principal of the College on the 17th of February 1988 in this regard. However, as will be admitted by even the President her husband was assassinated by the death squads of the JVP on the previous day (16). Perera stated at no time did Vijaya tell them there was any money demanded from any person to admit his son to Royal. As close friends of Vijaya this would no doubt had been revealed to them had their been such a demand. Following the assassination of Vijaya, Chandrika left the country and enroled her children in a school in London. |
