Cholera under control in Jaffna

by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi

The cholera epidemic is on the wane with precautionary measures already in place, health authorities said yesterday.

"It is now under control and we have not got any additional cases," Senior Epidemiologist Dr. T. A. Kulatilake told the Daily News yesterday.

Three cholera deaths were reported upto yesterday in the Jaffna peninsula while 28 suspected cases were detected during the last few days.

Dr. Kulatilake said the public visiting North, specially Jaffna, will be educated. Earlier, authorities feared that the epidemic would spread to other areas. One suspected positive case was reported from Kandy, Anuradhapura and Puttalam districts each.

Dr. Kulatilake said precautionary measures have been taken to combat the disease. The last cholera outbreak was in 1997 and continued until 2000. During 1999, 110 cases and seven deaths were reported.

Only four cases were reported during 2000 - with three from Puttalam and one from Kollonnawa. The last was in July 2000 from the Kolonnawa MOH area.
